Jessica H. Maurer on Rebuilding After a Health Crisis

My Fit & Flustered co-host, Dr. Erin Nitschke, interviewed me for Coach360 about the health crisis that stopped my life in 2022. We talked about what carried me through and about the guided journal that grew out of it, The Happiness Handbook: A Guide to Designing Joy.

When a fitness professional gets sick, two things go at once. Losing the income is the obvious part, and losing the identity you built on a body that performs is the part nobody warns you about. I lost both, and the second one took much longer to recover from.

What Carried Me Through

Erin and I talked about the small, practical choices that helped me rebuild when pushing harder was no longer an option.

Inside the article
  • I stopped relying on willpower, because motivation is one of the first things to leave when you are depleted.
  • I sorted my options into boulders and pebbles, and I leaned on small inputs like opening the blinds or stepping outside for four minutes.
  • I wrote one line a day about what actually helped, which built a record of evidence instead of a record of suffering.
  • I built a strong medical team and let them lead the clinical decisions.

The article also gets into why I kept my illness from the fitness industry for two years, and what that silence says about a profession that sells strength and stamina.

Willpower and motivation are the first two things to leave when you are depleted.

If you’re a coach who is quietly managing something right now, or you work with clients who are, this conversation is for you. Erin ends the interview by asking what I would tell a coach who is in the middle of it today.
