Stacey Lei Krauss on Bringing Mindfulness Into Your Fitness Classes

My newest article for Coach360 is all about mindfulness in fitness classes, and I got to feature my fellow Move Mentors co-founder Stacey Lei Krauss, the creator of willPower & grace. If you’ve ever decided mindfulness isn’t for you because you don’t teach yoga, this one is for you. You don’t need a mat, candles or a yoga background to lead it.

Our clients walk into class carrying their whole day with them. Stacey has spent nearly three decades helping instructors meet people right where they are, and I loved hearing how she brings presence into every part of a class.

Four Places Mindfulness Belongs on the Training Floor

In the article, I break a session into four moments, and each one serves a different purpose.

The four places
  • At the start, a short practice helps clients shift from the world outside to the room they’re in.
  • Inside the work, a moving meditation brings them back into their bodies.
  • In the transitions, thirty seconds of noticing returns them to the present.
  • At the close, attention turns inward and clients get their autonomy back.

The full article covers how to lead each one, how long each should last and how to keep the same practice going for four weeks so your clients can settle into it.

You don’t need a mindfulness certification to craft mindful cues. You need an authentic relationship with your own presence.

One of my favorite takeaways is how Stacey uses repetition on purpose, because a client can’t be present in a movement she’s still figuring out. You’ll also find her signature opening, called The Arrival, and her advice for leading mindfulness in a way that sounds like you.
