Exercise Research 101

Research shapes what fitness professionals teach, recommend, and believe. It reaches us through headlines, social media posts, continuing education courses, podcast interviews, and product marketing. By the time a finding arrives, it has often been shortened, simplified, or reshaped to sound more persuasive than the original study intended.

Understanding how research is designed can help professionals evaluate those claims more carefully.

This does not require advanced statistical training. It requires knowing what kind of study produced a finding, what that kind of study can reasonably demonstrate, and which numbers are worth checking before accepting a conclusion.

A detailed report on one person and an analysis pooling hundreds of trials can both be described as research. They do not offer the same level of evidence, and the difference matters when a client asks whether something works.
