Besides the instructor, music can be the biggest motivator in a fitness class. It can boost energy, help push participants through tough moments, and even aid coordination. Even in classes where movement isn’t timed to the beat, a bad playlist can make the workout feel like it’s dragging on FOREVER. Don’t let your participants feel stuck in a never-ending session because of poor music choices—plan and rock it out!
Ever wonder why so many people are drawn to pre-choreographed classes? Sure, some enjoy the consistency, but for most, it’s the guarantee that the music will perfectly match the moves. When the beats sync with the exercises, it creates a seamless, motivating experience. Music makes people want to move, so it’s essential to nail the playlist to give them the best workout possible. Before diving into playlist planning, though, make sure your music is legit and follows all licensing laws—more on that in this article.
1. Build Off of Your Workout Plan
Does your workout alternate between fast-paced agility drills and slower bodyweight strength moves? Your playlist should reflect that same rhythm. Pair upbeat, high-energy songs with agility drills, and slower tracks with a strong beat for those strength exercises. People naturally move to the energy of the music, even if they aren’t hitting every beat. So, don’t expect anyone to sprint through speed work with a slow, heavy song in the background.
2. Variety is Key
You might love 80s rock, but guess what? Not everyone is ready to do burpees to Van Halen. Variety in your playlist is a must. Throw in a mix of genres, and your participants will feel like you made the playlist just for them. You don’t have to love every song—after all, it’s only 3 minutes—but don’t be afraid to add a little pop, rock, or even a guilty pleasure track. Are you stuck for ideas? Ask your class for suggestions—they’ll love feeling included!

3. Don’t Sound Like the Radio
Resist the temptation to grab the top 10 singles off of Spotify. Chances are your participants hear those songs all day—whether on the drive to work, with their kids singing along, or at the grocery store. Mix things up with remixes, covers, or mash-ups of popular tracks. That way, you can keep the familiar tunes while adding a fresh twist to keep things exciting.
4. Rock It Out
Let’s face it—fitness pros spend much time (and money!) perfecting their playlists. So be proud of it! Listen to your mix before class to ensure it matches your audience’s mood and energy level. Then, when it’s go-time, step in with confidence, crank the volume, and rock out with your participants. Enjoy the moment and make the music part of the magic!
